Hello! We are Mark & Laura Kohnen and we are over the moon excited and grateful to welcome YOU to Zia!

Mark & I, Laura, have been married nearly 30 years and dreaming together has been our superpower! To us Zia has been a dream for many years waiting for us to bring it to life. Zia, New Haven began as an art gallery in 2010 and has evolved into a wellness/retreat/vacation destination.

I started out as an interior architect, morphed into a special education teacher and now I share Zia as a yoga instructor, Reiki master, life discovery coach, retreat guide, boutique owner and vacation rental host. I LOVE everything I get to do! It is an honor to hold space for my guests’ transformation through all of these modalities! I have a gift for seeing people and it is with that energy that I greet each guest.

Mark has been the owner and lead carpenter of Kohnen Craftsmanship for just a few months shy of our marriage, so going on 30 years! Time flies when you are having fun! He is a general contractor that specializes in historic renovation in St. Louis, MO and can do all the things from new construction to a simple repair. You can find his work at www.KohnenCraftsmanship.com. He is crazy talented and between my designs and ideas and his ideas and construction skills we have created some ingenious adventures!

Many years ago, we stumbled upon New Mexico and the Zia symbol. New Mexico stole our hearts & the Zia symbol grabbed our souls. One meaning of the Zia symbol is a sacred obligation to 4 areas of life: a strong body, clear mind, pure spirit, and devotion to others, we also add a devotion to God and ourselves with this. We adopted these sacred obligations for our life, referring to it as a “Zia Life”. With the desire to create a Zia Life for ourselves and provide a space for others to discover their own Zia Life, we created Zia My Retreat, a sanctuary where you can create a strong body, clear mind, pure spirit, and devotion to God, yourself, and others.

Mark and I created Zia, New Haven first, always holding onto the dream of adding additional locations! Zia, Hermann will be our second location and we are very excited about its debut this year, 2023! This location is set in a serene wooded location, surrounded by nature… it is sure to renew your soul!

Whether in sweet New Haven or secluded right outside of Hermann you will be provided a space, an ambiance, and a sacred energy bathed in love allowing you to relax, reconnect and renew.
